Remembering Sylvester Kiger

About Sylvester Kiger

Sylvester Kiger (1934–2020) was a Lexington native with a deep love for both literature and horse racing. His dual passions were nurtured at the Lexington Public Library by Miss Virginia Hayes, daughter of Thomas P. Hayes, owner of Donerail—the longest shot ever to win the Kentucky Derby.

After serving in the U.S. Army, he entered the equine insurance industry, representing Lloyd’s of London and insuring many famous horses, including Triple Crown winners Affirmed and Seattle Slew. He went on to found Kiger Insurance in Lexington, KY, which his family continues to run today.

Syl received many honors, but he was especially proud to have been inducted into the Henry Clay Hall of Fame. He never forgot his roots in Davis Bottom, Lexington, KY, or the neighbors and friends who shaped his early life.
